“Supporting our veterans is a cornerstone of our community involvement at Assurant,” said Assurant President and CEO Keith Demmings. “Last week, we were proud to be named among Forbes’ America’s Best Employers for Veterans 2025 and honor Josh’s service and sacrifice in partnership with Wounded Warriors Family Support. We hope this new vehicle will provide him with well-deserved mobility and independence.”
Wounded Warriors Family Support launched The Mobility is Freedom program in 2015 to provide modified vehicles for combat-wounded U.S. veterans. Across the U.S., there are approximately 350 veterans who need modified vehicles due to combat-related injuries. This is the fifth mobility-modified vehicle presented to a veteran through Assurant’s partnership with WWFS.
“The Mobility is Freedom program provides a combat-wounded veteran with the independence he or she needs to help them live a normal life,” Wounded Warriors Family Support CEO and President Kate McCauley said. “We could not provide Josh with a modified-specific vehicle without Assurant’s dedication and support.”
On April 2, 2012, just six weeks into his deployment, Cpl. Josh Lopez was clearing a house with fellow Marines when he stepped on an IED while under enemy fire. The explosion hurled him 20 feet into the air, causing catastrophic injuries. He eventually lost his right leg below the knee and underwent a grueling recovery process. Lopez was promoted to sergeant during his recovery, a testament to his resilience and dedication. Reflecting on that life-altering day, Lopez said, “All I could think of was my son.” His son, Joshua Jr., was only two weeks old when Lopez deployed to Afghanistan.
Today, Lopez’s journey is a powerful story of survival, sacrifice, and strength in the face of unimaginable adversity. The Assurant Foundation is honored to partner with Wounded Warriors Family Support and Mac Haik Chevrolet to provide the Chevrolet Suburban, which has been modified by Driver Rehabilitation Center of Excellence with full left-foot driving controls. Assurant is also providing an Assurant Vehicle Care service contract that covers the cost of certain repairs that may not be covered by the original warranty and extends beyond the manufacturer's warranty.
Assurant is honored to be recognized by Forbes’ as one of America’s Best Employers for Veterans in 2025, a reflection of ongoing commitment to supporting veterans. Chosen companies were identified through an independent survey which included over 17,000 U.S. veterans and evaluated employers based on criteria ranging from work atmosphere to career development and initiatives tailored to veterans. The full list, announced on November 5, 2025, can be viewed on the Forbes website.
